MORRIS, WILLIAM.

Autograph Letter, Signed.

1873, 1878 Correspondence from William Morris to Aglaia Ionides Coronio consisting of a three and ahalf page folded letter dated January 23, 1873, with a continuation on January 24, from Queen Square. A very personal letter to an early confidante, in which Morris mentions how he has cleared out of Queen Square, Bloomsbury, a place where "so much has happened to me while I have lived here." He goes on to remark about the "profoundly dismal" emptiness of the rooms. At this time, Morris was relocating to Horrington House in Chiswick, a "very little house with a pretty garden" which he thought would "suit Janey & the children." His entry on the 24th demonstrates a somewhat elevated mood on account of his progress with his translations, a long overdue visit from his children, and a foreseeable voyage to Iceland. Several repairs to original folds of the paper with some loss to text. Very good overall. A member of the wealthy Ionides family, Aglaia Coronio shared a lifelong friendship with Morris, and is mentioned by Marianne Tidcombe as being one of the first women to take up bookbinding in the nineteenth century. (Henderson, p. 51; Tidcombe, pp. 19-20).
