CHUNN, Calvin Ellsworth

OF RICE AND MEN

1946 CHUNN, Major Calvin Ellsworth; [Editor]. OF RICE AND MEN. The Story Of Americans Under The Rising Sun. Illustrated. [Los Angeles: Veterans' Publishing Company, 1946]. 8vo., red cloth, stamped in yellow. Signed presentation from Chunn on a front blank page: "To the O.R. Smiths with best wishes- Ellsworth." A remarkable journal- begun as a morale project by POWs- written by the men held captive in the Japanese Cabanatuan Prison Camp Number 1 during World War II. With paper, pens and other materials scarce, the men began to contribute to the book with most soldiers not living to see its publication. Before leaving Cabanatuan the manuscript was buried and, after the camp was liberated, it was dug up and later published in this book. "We hope that (this book) will explain many questions for those who still wait for their boys to come home from Bataan"- from the introduction page. Good (some wear & tiny chip head of spine; small ink name stamp of O.R. Smith, Tulsa, Oklahoma on the front endpaper).
