MORRIS, Robert

Autograph Letter Signed

1795 MORRIS, Robert. Autograph Letter Signed. A one page autograph letter signed, dated New Brunswick, NJ, February 23, 1795, to W. James Boggs, Philadelphia. Morris, the first Chief Justice appointed to the Supreme Court of New Jersey, discusses some business matters and mentions sending bills to the West New Jersey Society attorney in London. He also mentions the lack of a response from Supreme Court Justice William Paterson- also a New Brunswick resident: "Pray is he unwell, or, is the Supreme Court still sitting?" Morris briefly discusses his own health: "I have a slight bilious complaint which may probably disorder me a day longer." Boldly sign by Morris. Morris was born in New Brunswick in 1745. He was subsequently appointed by George Washington judge of the U.S. district court of New Jersey in 1789 and held that office until his death in 1815. The letter- of about 200 words- has usual folds for mailing with the recipient's address and remnants of a wax seal on the verso.
