Signed presentation with an original drawing by Groth on the front endpaper: "To Frankye and John, John Groth May 2, 1970. Via Ruth." "The War Prayer" was first published in a 1923 collection of Twain pieces and is here published separately for the first time. Twain asked this work not be published until after his death because "only dead men can tell the truth in this world." The lovely, original Groth drawing is of a woman clutching a baby in her arms. Groth was a war correspondent/illustrator with works now in the Metropolitan Museum, the Smithsonian Institute, and the Library of Congress. Very Good (light dampstaining to lower edge of covers); some related dampstaining (little soil & short tears, price-clipped) d/j.
