An eye-opening report on Russia's progress in Sovietizing Eastern Europe and how to guard against Soviet expansion. Signed by Stowe on the half- title page and with a nice signed presentation, to CBS News correspondent Winston Burdett and his wife, on the opposite page: "The Winston Burdetts. For Win and Georgie, Because it's quite wonderful to have as friends a husband and wife who really belong-- And especially, who belong together. With my cheers always, Lee. April 8, 1952, N.Y.C." Stowe was a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist. Winston Burdett, a radio and television correspondent for CBS News, testified in the 1950s before the United States Internal Security subcommittee that he became a Communist spy after being recruited into the Communist Party in 1937. He quit the party in 1942 after a succession of inconclusive sabotage attempts in Finland and elsewhere in Europe. Burdett was a protege of Edward R. Murrow, who helped him maintain his job at CBS.
