Engraved title page, and 3 plates including a folding plate of The Ruines of Persepolis (p 152). Fifty copper engravings in the text, and 6 maps of Madagascar (p21), The Persian Empire (p153), the Caspian Sea (p186), Babylon (p226; it shows the location of the Gardens), India, on this side Ganges (p336), and China and southeast Asia (p361). Marvelous engravings in the text of natives in local costume, and animals and fish, including a flying fish high in the air above a ship, confronted by two angry birds (p39). Covers are full 18th century dark brown calf with stamped rectangular panel with diamond shaped corner decorations. Modern rebacking, with gilt title (Herbert's Travels) at dark brown label, with six compartments, gilt decorations, and raised bands. Internally, signature of Symon Degge on letterpress title page and on front end paper (S. Degge), and occasional ink notes at margins and at the bottom of the map of Babylon. Folding map of Persepolis repaired at fold with tape; one small tear repaired with clear tape; and very small burn holes at some places in text; o/w near fine.
