Fine rich copper engraving 11 x 14?" image on 14? x 19?". Printed on india paper and laid onto wove paper, the word "Proof" engraved on the lower left corner. Very lt. scattered foxing in margins o/w vgc. The full caption reads "Captain James Clark Ross FRS, FRAS and FLS. to the Rt. Honble. and Honble. the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty and also to those Societies which have contributed to the expedition of Captn. Ross in command of the scientific voyage of Discovery, to hitherto unexplored Antarctic Regions. This Portrait is most Humbly dedicated by their very obedient servant - Henry Cook." A youthful & wavy-mained Ross is in full naval officers' uniform, with a bear fur over his shoulder. In his right hand is a telescope and an unusual apparatus, the "Fox Dip Circle" is prominently displayed at the lower right. This apparatus was used for magnetic observations. In the sky above him, the South star shines.
