Ross, James Clark. Rear Admiral Sir James Clark Ross, D.C.L: R.F.S. Painted by Stephen Pearce; engraved by Alexander Scott. The caption reads "From the Original Portrait placed in the Royal Hospital Greenwich by several Naval officers and Scientific men in honour of his great discoveries and achievements in the Arctic and the Antarctic Regions. North Magnetic Pole discovered 18th June 1831 - Highest North Latitude 82?N 44' attained 23rd July 1827 - Highest South Latitude 78?S 11' attained 23rd February 1842." 16 ?" X 21 ?" impression mark on wide margined paper. Mezzotint, and exceptionally strong impression. Ca. 1850. Ross is an older man in uniform, seated at a round table with charts and instruments to his right, a standing globe to his left. Hanging on the wall behind is a map entitled "South Polar Discovery 1841-2" with Mt. Erebus clearly visible. Ross's notable achievements include the discovery of the position of both the Northern and Southern Magnetic Pole. The instrument used to achieve this was the Fox Dip Circle, and it is pictured on the table beside him. A superb copy of a rare print.
