Autographed letter signed, written two weeks before the start of the war, to secretary of war Simon Cameron, regarding an army surgeon, Dr. Barthelow, who has invented a substitute for gunpowder (Barthelow was killed at Bull Run). 2 pages, 12mo (heavy discoloration), with 3 endorsements on page 3 and 4 including generals James B. Fry and Lorenzo Thomas (page 4 has been skillfully edged and mounted along outer edge). Washington, D.C., April 3, 1861. unbound very good "Dr. Barthelow, Surgeon in the army, has invented a substitute for Gunpowder (the most useful & desirable invention for these troubled times) and desires to be ordered to Washington in order to test his invention..."
