FLAGG, James Montgomery
American illustrator known especially for his World War I recruiting poster of a pointing Uncle Sam with "I want you" caption. Fine signed original watercolor celebrating New Year's 1949, depicting an allegorical figure of 1948 as an old man in tattered clothing making his exit as he is pelted with garbage. The man is accompanied by a pig, and a small caption points to the pig's hindquarters and says "Where we'll miss 1948!" 8" x 11", on his personal letterhead. New York, 1949.
1877-1960 Painted in red at lower right is the inscription: "1949 Happy New Year to ... from Jim Flagg."
