London: Longmans, Green and Co. 1929 8vo. 180 pp. Signed and inscribed on title page. A scholarly yet entertaining book examining the dynamic of comedy in english literature. Priestley, a reknowned English novelist, analyzes English characters in fiction and drama. Works are examined from Poets Chaucer to Chesterton, dramatists Shakespeare and W.S. Gilbert and novelists Fielding and Sterne and Wodehouse and Evelyn Waugh. The book elaborates on English humour as a peculiar national charcteristic, and comapres it to the very different Gallic wit, American wisecrack or Jewish joke. There is a special chapter on feminine humour, another on clowns and comedians, and another on comic art.
