Gilbert Imlay

A Description of the Western Territory of North America; containing a succinct account of its climate, natural history, population, agriculture, manners and customs, with an ample description of the several divisions into which that country is partitioned, and an accurate statement of the various tribes of Indians that inhabit the frontier country. To which is annexed a delineation of the laws and government of the state of Kentucky. Tending to shew the probable rise and grandeur of the American Empire.

Dublin: William Jones 1793 12mo., xx, 249 pp. Contemporary calf, rebacked. First Dublin edition. Imlay served as a Captain in the American Army during the War of Independence. On returning to Europe he became involved in commercial speculations, living for three years with the author Mary Wollstonecraft by whom he had a daughter. This particular work consists mainly of reprints of earlier rare works relating to Kentucky, and a report by Thomas Jefferson on the Quantty and Situation of hte lands not claimed by the Indians, nor granted to, no claimed by any citizens within the territory of the United States. This edition preceded the second edition published in London in the same year; the first having been published in 1792. Sabin, 34357; Howes, 112; cf. Field, 747.
