Handsomely bound by Root, illustrated with over 230 engravings drawn on wood. A collection of character sketches and illustrations by noted French writers and artists, “blending their caustic satire, and combining their studies of character...they have united in the great task of depicting the manners of their contemporaries” (p. xix). With Balzac’s sketches sketches of “The Parisian Lady” and “The Grocer”, and forty-one other sketches, including “The Literary Adventurer”, “The Physician”, “The Attorney”, “The Midwife”, “The Dilettante”, “The Government Clerk”, “The Parisian Lady’s Maid”, and “The Speculator”.
