James Morier

The Adventures of Hajji Baba Of Ispahan.

New York: Random House 1937 4to. Full color pictoral cover; image repeated on dust jacket. Beautifully Illustrated by Cyrus Leroy Baldridge. Fine. Second edition (first edition 1824). This classic has often been compared with Burton's "Arabian Nights." Indeed, the publishers were surprised to find upon investigation that there exist in this country several "Hajji Baba" clubs, numbering hundreds of members. Hajji Baba is a story of intense adventure in Persia, and it appealed to Cyrus LeRoy Baldridge as highly appropriate for his provocative and colorful illustrations. Starting at Bagdad, he set off with his wife to retrace the journeys of Hajji himself, and after a series of fantastic adventures (in one town a native told him calmly "the last man who sketched here, we stoned to death") brought home the sketches for this new edition, 1937 by Random House.
