Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard 1833 8vo. Original boards, rebacked, later paper spine label. Occasional light foxing, edges uncut and unopened, a very good copy. First edition in English, very scarce. “Alex De Tocqueville was a French magistrate who visited the United States with his friends Gustave de Beaumont in 1831 for the purpose of examining prisons and penitentaries in America. This is the report they rendered to the French government.” Marke. De Tocqueville’s Democracy in America “was based on his observations made during the same tour.” They report in depth on the history of the penitentiary system in America; the regimen of the conditions in prisons in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New york [including Sing Sing]; as well imprisonment for debt, and the effects of pauperism and intemperance. The Philadelphia printing issued in the same year as the Paris printing, which did not include Lieber’s contributions. Lieber’s preface states that the authors requested that his translation be made available to the public “at the same time” as the Paris printing. A lifelong student of penal reform, Lieber presents many of his own ideas in discussing the principal work.Sabin 4191. Not in Marvin, Eberstadt, Decker, Larned.
