Mrs. Jameson

Sacred and Legendary Art.

London: Longman, Brown, Green 1848 8vo. 3/4 tan morocco over tan boards, spine lettered in gilt with brown labels. Illustrated. Some minor spotting to cover, else a fine copy. The prolific Jameson (1794-1860) is most remembered for her work on the heroines of Shakespeare. She was a constant confidante and advisor to other female authors of her period inlcuding Browning, Eliot, Gaskell, Martneau, Kemble, Mitford. This beautifully illustrated broad study of the origins and evolution of Christian legend and iconography as reflected in art took six years to complete, and became one of her more popular works, constantly reprinted for the next fifty years.
