Criticism of Dickens scholars who failedto note Mr. Pickwick’s first appearance as a hapless angler in the illustrations of Robert Seymour (eleven of his charming drawings are reproduced here) some three years prior to the first of the Pickwick Papers. The controversy between Dickens and Seymour was bitter and was not resolved by Seymour’s death.
