W. Blanchard Jerrold
A Brage Beaker with the Swedes.
London: Nathaniel Cooke, Milford House, Strand. 1854 3/4 calf over marbled boards. W. Blanchard Jerrold (1826-1884) was an English journalist and author whose autobiogrpahical accounts delve not only into his many travels but also more sober details concerning Swedish commerce and the like; there are tabular appendices of imports, exports, and tariffs. The book is amusingly illustrated by himself. Due to a severe problem with his eyesight, Jerrold abandoned his career as an artist and took up journalism for several newspapers. He was appointed Crystal Palace commissioner to Sweden in 1853 and wrote the above title on his return. Mr. Jerrold ssought to crtique and refine certain aspects of society in Sweden, and felt it was his duty to report to his own countrymen on the state of manners, culture and the fine arts.
