Ferdinand Adam Pernau was born at Steinach in lower Austria. Studying birds on his property of Rosenau near Coburg, Pernau documented different aspects of bird behavior and “deserves to be ranked among those who have paved the way for the modern methods of investigating bird life” (Stresemann 35). This book contains a thorough examination of bird behavior, for example, he states that complicated bird songs are not innate/inborn but that they have to be learned by listening to another bird. He was also the first person who clearly recognized that the migration of birds was not caused by temperatures, but “by a hidden pull or attraction involved at the right time to migrate”. He followed with interest the possible measuring by various calls or cries of birds. (Stressemann 290). 8vo Copper engraved frontis of birds, title in red and black, elaborate head and tail pieces.
