London 1829 John Murray Fourth Edition. contemporary full green diced calf with gilt boards, spine with 5 compartments of floral gilt design, brown morocco labels on two and four are no longer present with the exception of volume 3 on two, the rest remain with blind tooled lettering on two and four, all edges marbled. Marbled paste-down and free endpapers. Reginald Heber was born at Malpas, Cheshire, England, April 21, 1783 to a heritage of wealth and culture. Heber was educated at Brasenose College, Oxford winning many prizes for both Latin and English poetry. He was ordained in 1807. In 1823, after refusing twice, he reluctantly accepted an appointment as Bishop of Calcutta which at that time included the whole of India, Ceylon, and Australia, sailing on 16 June 1823. Prior to his departure for India, Heber was awarded the D.D. degree from Oxford. After three years of ceaseless traveling and intense missionary work, Heber died suddenly while visiting Trichinopoly, India on April 3, 1826 at the age of 42 of a cerebral hemorrhage while in his bath. 8vo Volume 1 contains 16 plates, Volume 2 contains 7 plates, and Volume 3 contains 4 plates, for a total of 27 plates Occasional faint foxing on the title page of all volumes otherwise a very good set, signed by previous owner on the recto of the blank before the title in Volume 2, signed in contemporary ink dated 1830. A rather handsom set 3 volumes Bateson III ,234; Graesse III, 227 Volume 1 P. title, lxvii, blank, 450; Volume 2 P. title, vi, plate index, blank, 564; Volume 3 P. title, vi, plate index, blank, 525, blank, (2), viii.
