Mir'at i buldan I Nasiri (An historical and geographical dictionary, with special reference to persia but completed only to 4 volumes) (Volume 3 only)

Tehran 1879 Rare copy signed E.G. Browne binding is circa 1917 (noted Edward G. Browne in his own handwriting) ½ calf with marbled boards, blind tooled design on edge of leather. Spine with 6 gilt compartments of raised bands, red morocoo lable on two, green morocco lable on three. Contains 9 full paged lithographed portraits and views. A facinating review of Nasiri’d-Din Shah’s reign during the Qajar Dynasty at the second half of the 19th century. This particular volume of the series starts just after Nasiri’d-Din Shah’s return from Europe at the 16th year of his reign in the year 1279 A. H. The book is signed and dated by the prominent Orinetalist scholar Edward G. Browne c.1917

Edward Granville Brown the prominent English Oriental scholar, perhaps best known for his documentation and historical narratives of the Bábí movement. He published two translations of Bábí histories, and wrote several of the few Western accounts of early Bábí and Bahá'í history. In addition, he wrote A Year Among the Persians (1893) sympathetic portrayal of Persian society which few Westerners have ever seen, including a frank account of the effects of opium. After his death in 1926 it was reprinted and became a classic in English travel literature. 4to Contains 9 full paged lithographed portraits and views. Occasional mild browning, contains contemporary pencil marginalia otherwise in very good to excellent condition. British Museum Persian Catalogue 14773. i 11.
