Prohor Prokopovich
Letters of Reasons, Separation of the Roman Church from the Eastern.
St. Petersburg 1862 Typography of the Ministry of Internal Affairs recent ½ calf with marbled boards, spine with 5 compartments of raised bands title in gilt. Text in Russian
In the 11th century the Great Schism took place between Rome and Constantinople, which led to separation of the Church between the Roman Catholic Church, and the Eastern Orthodox Church. There were doctrinal issues like authority of the Pope involved in the split, but these were exacerbated by cultural and linguistic differences between Latins and Greeks.
The final breach is often considered to have arisen after the sacking of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusade in 1204. The sacking of the Church of Holy Wisdom and establishment of the Latin Empire in 1204 is viewed with some rancour to the present day.
The Russian Orthodox Church also known as the Orthodox Catholic Church of Russia, is that body of Christians who are united under the Patriarch of Moscow, who in turn is in communion with the other patriarchs and primates of the Eastern Orthodox Church. 4to Mild occasional foxing otherwise an excellent copy. P. half-title, blank, title, printer’s imprint, (2), i-xxiv, (2), 1-434, (2), 1-6, 1-49, (1)
