Rome 1690 First and Second contemporary full molted calf with embossed floral boarder within another embossed floral boarder. Spine with 7 densely gilt compartments of raised bands, black morocco label on two and six. All edges marbled, marbled paste down and free end papers, ex-libris on paste down end paper. The difference between the first and second editions is that 31 plates from the first edition were replaced with 34 new plates in the second. Pietro Santi Bartoli was an Italian engraver, draughtsman and painter. He moved to Rome in 1635, where he engraved many Roman monuments, publishing in Admiranda Romanorum Antiquitatum. Bartoli engraved from Raphael, Polidoro da Caravaggio, the Carracci and Lanfranco, as well as his own subjects. As a draughtsman, Bartoli reproduced the Codice Virgiliano (Rome, Vatican, Bib. Apostolica, Cod. Vat. 3867) in 55 plates (1677; Rome, Calcografia N.), commissioned by Cardinal Camillo Massimo. For Massimo, he also did drawings of ancient Roman paintings and mosaics. Later, he lived in Paris, where he was introduced at the court of Louis XIV.

Giovanni Pietro Bellori was a prominent biographer of the Italian Baroque artists of the seventeenth century. He had been curator of antiquities for Pope Clement X. In 1671, he was appointed secretary of the Accademia di San Luca, then librarian and antiquarian to the Queen Christina of Sweden. he died in 1690 in Rome.
