The Book of Common Prayer [London, 1663] / The New Testament, London 1660/ The Whole Book of Psalms, London 1661. Bound together in a contemporary"sombre" binding

London: Henry Hills and John Field, 1660-1663 A handsome volume, made even more interesting by the contemporary ownership inscription "Elizabeth Maynard 1663" on the verso of the New Testament title page, and, in her handwriting on the blank recto of the Psalms, "What Children I have christened [there follows a list of nine names] Innocents day 1665" plus additional notations of subsequent christenings in 1665 and 1667. As the "Children" included a Mrs Cooper, it may be that the word is used in an ecclesiastical sense; and it is interesting to conjecture what role Elizabeth Maynard played in the ceremony in these years following the Restoration of 1660 (BINDING) 8vo. Woodcut of the Royal Arms of Charles II on verso of final leaf of the Common Prayer. Contemporary black morocco "sombre" binding, elaborately tooled in blind on upper and lower covers with a central lozenge cartouche made from double impressions of two separate tools, the same tools being used to decorate the four corners, the design surrounded by floral sprays, spine of six raised banks with floral tooling in each of the seven compartments, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. Front joint repaired, skilful minor restoration to the corners by Sotheran, overall a very attractive binding. Lacks first three leaves of Book of Common Prayer. Herbert 669 or 670 (with OT)
