Thackeray, William Makepeace

The Chronicle of the Drum

New York: Charles Scribner's, 1882 Inscribed on the flyleaf "Emily Louise Phillips / from / Arthur B. Frost. / Nov. 23 1881." Emily Louise Phillips, the daughter of a wealthy Philadelphia industrialist, married A.B. Frost two years after this inscription, on October 19, 1883. She herself was an artist/illustrator of no mean talent who was working for Harper's when their paths crossed and the romance ensued -- roughly around the time this book, an early one in Frost's career, was published. A superb association (FROST, A.B.) 8vo. With four illustrations by Frost, others by Pyle, Woodward, Gibson, et. al. Original pictorial grey cloth stamped in gilt, black, and red. Inner hinge cracked, else fine
