Weisgard, Leonard

Original Watercolor Drawing for Who Dreams of Cheese, created forCharles Scribner's Sons

n.p., [c. 1940 or later] An innovative artist and Caldecott Award winner, Weisgard was instrumentalin changing children’s picturebooks from being primarily stories to incorporating modernist art and other disciplines and creating a medium which invited the viewer to “see things in a new way” (Bader). The picture here is a scene in a dense forest, incorporating countless types of leaves and grasses in various shades of green, surrounding the central figures of a bird perched on a branch eating from a bunch of purple grapes, and a butterfly and a dragonfly flutter over a nest containing three white eggs. In the lower left corner, a large gray squirrel watches the activity in the branches. The drawing is highlighted with splashes of brilliant yellows and a translucent violet sky . Matted and framed. Bader, pp. 224-225
