Flagg, James Montgomery (1877- 1960)

A FINE CHARCOAL RENDERING OF THE HEAD OF A YOUNG MAN, signed JamesMontgomery Flagg at lower right

n.p., n.d. A strong portrait, a little larger than life size, of a dark haired young man, in profile looking right, wearing a black bow tie. The subject is attractive, but the artist has not idealized him: it is a candid and compelling rendering, done with the typical bravura of the almost legendary American artist and illustrator. James Montgomery Flagg (1877- 1960) “lived with gusto. He epitomized the public concept of the handsome, bohemian artist, surrounded by beautiful models, dashing off pictures with sheer exuberance of talent…His rapid portrait studies and incisive caricatures were prized by many prominent sitters” (Reed, p. 95). Flagg is best known for his World War I Uncle Sam recruiting poster, “I Want You,” and as a painter of serious portraits as well. He exhibited in the Paris salon of 1900, at the National Academy of Design and the New York Watercolor Club. He was elected to the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1980. A FINE EXAMPLE OF FLAGG'S PORTRATURE Image size approximately 16 x 10 inches. Matted
