His early association with The Daily Graphic launched his fame and established him “as one of the foremost illustrators of his time, although eclipsed by Rackham and Dulac. He was a superb draughtsman, especially in chalks and had a strong and inventive imagination” — House, p. 470. A superb character study of the the young Hawthorne, leaning against a mantlepiece, a quill in hand, beneath a portrait of Washington (HAWTHORNE, NATHANIEL) 8 3/4 x 13 3/4 inches.
