Litchfield: Printed at Litchfield [n.pub.], 1799 John Cosens Ogden (1751-1800) was an Episcopal clergyman from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, who visited Quebec, Lachine, Montreal, Trois-Rivieres, Kingston, Niagara and York in 1794. A section on his impressions of Upper Canada is contained in "A Letter from a Gentleman to his Friend, Descriptive of the Different Settlements in the Province of Upper Canada", originally published in 1795 and reprinted on pp. 91-119 here. This letter is one of the earliest and most complete estimations of the newly created Province of Upper Canada (est. 1791) and its potential. The "Letter" concludes with descriptions of Fort Miami, Detroit, and a mention of Mackenzie's overland expedition to the Pacific Ocean First edition. 12mo. 119 pp. Full contemporary sheepskin. Contemporary signatures on front cover. Upper corner of rear cover and last 100 pp. dog-eared (with small portions lacking, but not affecting text or page numbers), some contemporary inked letters on endpapers, rear free endpaper wanting.
