Graustark. The Story of a Love Behind a Throne

Chicago: Herbert S. Stone and Company, 1901 With two remarkable letters from the author to the publishers, regarding the manuscript of his first book The first, dated July 5, 1899, several months before publication, presents the original manuscript to the Stone. "Dear Sirs, I have just completed another story, possibly more fanciful if not so whimsical as "Pootoo's Gods" and write to ask if you will give it consideration while I am revising the other. "Graustark" is the title I have given it and it is about one third shorter than "Pootoo's Gods." It is entirely a piece of imagination and I believe contains some good features. Will you kindly treat it as well as you did my other piece and let me hear from you at your earliest convenience? Yours sincerely, Geo. B. McCutcheon." The second letter, dated Jan. 30, 1901, 2pp. 4to, is addressed to Stone himself, and discusses in depth revisions to the manuscript, undoubtedly suggested by Stone. "To the best of my ability I have supplied an ending and I dwelt a little bit longer on the scene when Gabriel is accused and breaks down, attempting to make it clearer ... The alteration which took the edge off of that dramatic scene in the throne room, where Yetive says 'Because I love him!', I think ruins the finale as a whole ... My object was to have this strong American's love conquer all opposition, break down royal traditions and beliefs ... the 'cuts' in the main are judicious. The name of Lorry is infinitely better than Noble ... I hope you will agree that the story as it now stands will please the average American reader and will make him proud of Lorry as it makes him also love Yetive ... " According to Kunity & Hacraft, Graustark was McCutcheon's "first , and most popular, novel ... [which] he sold to the publisher for $500. It made half a million for the publisher, and as much more, later, as a play ... " With TLKS from John van Kohn of Seven Gables Bookshop to Victor Jacobs about Stone & Kimball First edition, second issue with the name 'Lorry' instead of 'Noble' on line 6, p. 150. 12mo. 457, [3] pp. Original cloth, a little faded, spine dulled
