[Steele, Sir Richard, attributed to]

A Roman Story

London: s.n, “Printed in the Year 1711. Price Two Pence” A Whig satire on Harley, Lord Oxford, andon the Tory opposition to Marlborough, using Livy's story of the rivalry of M. Manlius and Camillus as a framework, with Harley as Manlius ("a turbulent, bold, and crafty Nature"); Marlborough as Camillus ("the great Saviour and Restorer of his Country"), and the Gauls, of course, the French. In 1711, Harley was appointed Lord Treasurer, and Marlborough dismissed from all offices. The attribution to Steele is likely, as he was allied with (and profited from) the Whigs. A rare and important pamphlet at critical time in English history, when the Tories were negotiating a peace with France to end the War of the Spanish Succession First edition. 8vo. Title page with typographical ornaments. 16pp. Self wrappers, untrimmed. Title and final page a bit soiled, otherwise a very good, sound copy. Morgan N-522; OCLC: 5191600 (8 copies in American libraries)
