Japan, ca. 1870 A very elegant set of plates showing life-size insects disporting themselves amid awide range of blossoms, leaves, grasses, lotus, vines, and an ear of corn. Among the varieties of insects are locust, praying mantis, cicada, grasshopper, caterpillar, snail, slug, butterfly, and many others: approximately 48 insects are depicted, along with one baleful bullfrog eyeing a potential prey.
