Album of 14 Chinese watercolors on rice paper

n.p. (probably Canton, China), n.d. (ca. 1860) The subjects of this album fall into two categories:the first six paintings are of street sellers: vendors of flowers, fried food, a seamstress, and others. The subsequent eight paintings depict various judicial punishments: a sentencing scene with the accused before a judge, followed by chainings, beatings, ear-pulling, etc., ending up with a victim carried away to his beheading in a hanging basket. Both these subjects were very popular, and appear in various media over a lengthy period of time. A characteristic album, probably done for sale to visitors to the Celestial Kingdom (CHINESE RICE PAPER WATERCOLORS) Sm folio. Each approximately 11 x 7-1/2 inches, mounted within blue borders on album leaves, and in two cases, on cards.
