H[arris], James

Hermes: or, a Philosophical Inquiry concerning Language and UniversalGrammar

London: by H. Woodfall, 1741 Inscribed on the flyleaf: "J. Shaftesbury | Given me by James Harris 1751." James Harris (1709-1780) was the eldest son of James Harris by his second wife Lady Elizabeth Ashley Cooper, third daughter of the second Lord Shaftsbury (died 1699), and sister of the third Lord Shaftsbury (1671- 1713); the fourth earl, Anthony Ashley Cooper, lived from 1711 - 1771. The inscription of 1751 would therefore most probably be to the fourth Earl, Harris's cousin. Splendid copy of this ground-breaking early work on the theory of language and grammar: the notion of a "universal grammar," in fact, has now become the standard thinking among post-Chomskyian linguists First edition. 8vo. Inserted frontispiece of the Author after Bartolozzi. In presentation binding of contemporary red morocco gilt, all edges gilt. O'Neil H-14; Allston III 812
