Pennant, Thomas

A Tour of Scotland and Voyage to the Hebrides

Chester: John Monk, 1774 A celebrated work, recounting the author's second tour of Scotland, covering the country's scenery, topography, history, antiquities, botany (in which he was aided by his companion, Rev. Lightfoot), commerce, and other aspects. This highly informative work impelled one critic to note, “Mr. Pennant is setting out to approfondir every corner of Scotland, both by land and sea. I verily believe, where horses and boats fail, he will take unto himself cork jackets, if not wings.” The book is illustrated by a series of remarkable plates, and the work was subsequently translated into German and French. Includes, at pp. 260-271, accounts of the isle of Staffa, illustrated with six striking plates and a map, quoting portions of Joseph Banks' letter to him IMPORTANT (SCOTLAND) First Edition. 4to. With 44 engraved plates and maps, some folding. Modern beige calf, front inner hinge cracked, some offsetting from plates, else near fine. Cox III, p. 24
