Dorchester, Dorset, nov 16, 1892 A relatively simple note, conveyed in Hardy's elaborate prose: "Mr. Thomas Hardy regrets to inform the President of the Royal Society that he is compelled by recent severe indisposition to forego the pleasure of being present at the dinner to which he had accepted an invitation, recovery not having advanced quite sufficiently for travelling." 8vo.
