Egan, Pierce

Life in London; or, the Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorn, Esq. andCorinthian Tom, Accompanied by Bob Logic, the Oxonian, in Their Ramblesand Sprees throught the Metropolis

New Orleans: W. M'Kean, 1837 First American Edition of Egan’s classic, which first appeared in London in 1821 with its famous illustrations, omitted in this edition; it bears the unusual imprint of M'Kean of New Orleans and a Louisville publisher named James Rice, Jr. Each volume, interestingly, contains 4pp. of ads for Carey and Lea of Philadelphia -- clearly the book had enough interested to gain distribution on the East coast. Quite scarce in the original boards, American Imprints locates four copies only First American Edition. 12mo. pp. [i]-viii, [13]-228; [i]-iv, [13]-180. Original muslin-backed boards with printed paper spine labels; label to second volume slightly chipped, spines faded; sporadic foxing and browning internally. Hartley 591; American Imprints 44147
