Churchill, Winston

A History of the English Speaking Peoples. Volume I: The Birth of Britain;Volume II: The New World; Volume III: The Age of Revolution

New York: Dodd, Mead, 1956; 1956; 1957 These unique (as far as is known) copies of the First American Editions of Churchill’s History were presented to the president of the Book-of-the- Month Club. The fact the the publisher did not present a copy of the fourth and final volume is not surprising: whereas the early volumes of the series were enormously successful, by the time the final volume was published (1958), interest had considerably dropped. According to Dodd, Volume I was published simultaneously in America (April 23, 1956); of Volume II , the English edition came out on Nov. 26, 1956, the American edition Dec. 3, 1956; of Volume III, the American edition on Sept. 23, 1957, appears to have preceded the English (on Oct. 14, 1957); oddly enough Dodds mentions no American edition of volume IV. Again, printings were enormous First American Editions. 3 of 4 vols., 8vo. . Each in a publisher’s presentation binding of full blue morocco, upper covers with red morocco onlay stamped gilt lion rampant, spines lettered in gilt, each with 2 ornaments of red and gilt morocco onlays, turn-ins with double gilt fillets, t.e.g., by the Kingsport Press. Spines of first two volumes slightly faded. In original slipcases. Cohen, A267.3 (I); A267.3 (II); A267.3 (III)
