The ever-versatile Owen, who introduced thelegislation creating the Smithsonian, was also chairman of the Building Committee, and his book has for its goal the enlightenment of the general public as well as “to enlighten the judgment and form the taste of those who are appointed to sit in judgment on the result of his [the architect's] labors.” As such, it is one of the most important American books of its time, and shows the influence of Pugin and Ruskin. It also features striking architectural plates, including superb views of Grace Church in New York as well as various views of the Smithsonian buildings First Edition. 4to. Wood-engraved frontispiece and title-page (tinted), 6 lithographed plates, 7 full-page wood-engraved plates, after James Renwick, and 99 wood engraved illustrations in the text. Original blue cloth with gilt column stamped on upper cover; spine and edges faded, internally a fine copy. Hitchcock 885
