Six folding plates (three of which are entirely engraved, two are letter-press, & one is a combination). 52 pp. Large 4to, orig. semi-stiff boards (several of the plates are lightly dampstained). Florence: G. Cambiagi, 1791. First edition of this attractive and scarce book. Fantoni (1721-1804), served as a hydraulic engineer to the Tuscan court and was a member of the Bologna Scientific Society. The present work describe the engineering works which Leopold II viewed during his visit in June 1790 to the Chiana River. This river rises in the Apennines south of Arezzo and often caused floods in the valley of Chiusi. Until the end of the 18th century, the entire valley from Arezzo to Chiusi was a uninhabitable swamp. The construction of the canal, overseen by Fantoni, moved the watershed some 25 miles father south, so it waters now flow partly into the Arno and partly into the Tiber.
