First edition of this important memoir in which Cauchy explains the dispersion of light on the basis of the undulatory theory. It completes Fresnel’s researches on the subject. Cauchy was the first to attempt to work out a mathematical basis for the properties of ether. This book was written and printed in Prague where Cauchy resided as tutor to the Duc de Bordeaux after the abdication of his father, King Charles X.
