Helvetius (1685­1755), a member of the distinguished family of physicians, was court physician to King Louis XIV and Queen Maria Leczinska and inspector of the French military hospitals in Flanders. He was a member of the academies of sciences of Paris, Berlin, London, and Florence. This was a popular and successful book with several later editions and an English translation. The first part of the book deals with physiology of the body. The second half of the book is concerned with small pox and methods of combating it. Nice copy. Bayle & Thillaye, Biographie Médicale, p. 224­"Après s'être occupé de la théorie des fièvres intermittentes et continues, qu'il fait dépendre de l'épaississement du sang pour les premières, et du vice de la fermentation de cette liqueur pour les secondes, il propose différents moyens curatifs, tels que la saignée, le vomissement, la purgation."
