Barnard (1815-82), a graduate of West Point, served on the corp of engineers and worked on many projects during a long and successful career. “Contains the author’s ‘The Precession of the Equinoxes and Nutation and Resulting from the Theory of the Gyroscope,’ ‘On the Motions of Freely Suspended and Gyroscopic Pendulums, and on the Pendulum and Gyroscope as exhibiting the Rotation of the Earth,’ and ‘Internal Structure of the Earth considered as affecting the Phenomena of Precession and Nutation’.”–Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, p. 25.
