Clauberg (1622-65), German philosopher, studied the Cartesian philosophy under John Raey at Leyden. Professor of philosophy and theology at Herborn and later at Duisburg, he was one of the earliest teachers of the new doctrines in Germany. Clauberg first suggested the word “ontology” to be used in place of “metaphysics.” For a discussion of Clauberg’s ideas and these books, see Thorndike, VII, pp. 651-53.
