(HERSCHEL, Sir William & Sir John F.W.).
The Catalogue of the Herschel Library.
Compiled by Isabella Herschel. Being a Catalogue of the Books owned by Sir William Herschel, Kt. and his son Sir John F.W. Herschel, Bart. Edited by Sydney Ross. Many reproductions of title-pages. xii, 578 pp. Thick 8vo, illustrated boards. Troy, New York: Printed for the Editor [& distributed by Jonathan A. Hill], 2001. This book is based on the manuscript catalogue of the library formed by William Herschel (1738-1822) and his son John Herschel (1792-1871), prepared and written by the latter's daughter, Isabella (1831-93) in 1889. The Herschel family established a dynasty in British astronomy which lasted for four generations. The library was that of working astronomers, heavily weighted with observatory reports, and represents a survey of nearly a century of rich scientific achievement by some of the greatest names in the late 18th and 19th century science. The Herschels also had wide-ranging intellectual interests and official duties which are reflected in the catalogue. The library has been widely dispersed and this book is the best record of the library. It includes every item in Miss Herschel's manuscript catalogue (now in the Pierpont Morgan Library), with bibliographical information taken from the Union Catalogue of the Library of Congress, the Catalogue of the British Library, and the Royal Society's Catalogue of Scientific Papers. Printed in a very limited edition.
