JACOBI, Karl Gustav Jacob.

Canon Arithmeticus sive Tabulae quibus exhibentur pro Singulis Numeris Primis vel Primorum Potestatibus infra 1000 Numeri ad Datos Indices et Indices ad Datos Numeros pertinentes.

xl, 248 pp. Large 4to, half-calf & marbled boards, uncut. Berlin: Typis Academicis, 1839. First edition of a rare book. It is concerned with primitive roots; “for each prime and power of a prime less than 1,000 it gives two companion tables showing the numbers with given indexes and the index of each given number.”–D.S.B., VII, p. 54. Jacobi (1804-51), spent 18 years teaching at the University of Königsberg where his tireless activity produced amazing results in both research and academic instruction. Jacobi was an essential factor in the revival of mathematics at German universities. A very fine uncut copy. Ex Bibliotheca Mechanica. ❧ Smith, History of Mathematics, I, pp. 506-07.
