Ritter (1776-1810), who tragically died at a young age, discovered ultra-violet light, gave the earliest account of the decomposition of water by an electric current, and was the first to construct an electrical accumulator. This is the first scientific work written by Ritter while under the influence of Naturphilosophie which had become prevalent in several German intellectual centers, including Munich.
