Hopkinson (1849-98), was director of the Siemens Laboratory and professor at King’s College, London. “The papers in these two volumes were originally published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society and in various engineering journals, and were edited for this publication by the author’s son, who also wrote the biography of his father... “The first volume contains Hopkinson’s papers on electricity and those relating to his work on electric lighthouses. To those have been joined some addresses and his James Forrest lecture on the relation of mathematics to engineering.
