IBN TUFAYL, Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Malik.

The History of Hai Eb'n Yockdan, an Indian Prince: or, the Self-Taught Philosopher.

Written Originally in the Arabick Tongue... Set forth not long ago in the Original Arabick, with the Latin Version, by Edw. Pocock. M.A....and now Translated into English. Title within ruled border. 14 p.l. (of 15, lacking the license leaf), 217, [1] pp. 8vo, cont. calf (rubbed, lower joint cracked but strong), spine gilt. London: R. Chiswell & W. Thorp, 1686. First Ashwell translation into English of "one of the most original books of the Middle Ages, a philosophical romance called after its hero, Haiy ibn Yaqzan...It is the history of a sort of metaphysical Robinson Crusoe proving the identity of revealed religion and philosophy, this philosophy being the extreme Muslim neo-Platonism...It justifies the doctrine of the twofold truth. The introduction contains an account of the development of Muslim philosophy. The story itself includes a sketch of a natural classification of the sciences, a discussion of spontaneous generation, and miscellaneous scientific information."Sarton, Vol. II, p. 354. Ibn Tufayl (d. 1185), "was a Spanish Muslim who received a broad education in the religion of Islam and the Arabic secular sciences. His professional career was that of a physician, first at Granada, Ceuta, and Tangier, and later (1163-1182) as court physician to the Almohad sultan of Morocco and Andalusia."D.S.B., XIII, p. 488(and see the long note about the text). With its solitary protagonist on a desert island, Ibn Tufayl's work may have inspired Defoe to create Robinson Crusoe. The text appeared in several European languages following the bi-lingual 1671 original edition prepared by Edward Pococke, whose Latin version was the basis for a 1674 English translation by George Keith. George Ashwell (1612-95), made another translation from Pococke's Latin edition. Very good crisp copy with the engraved armorial bookplate of Hans Sloane, a nephew of Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753), the physician, naturalist, and founding benefactor of the British Museum. Lacks the license leaf. Wing A-151.
