First edition of an influential and very popular book which went through many editions. The present work, an elementary treatise on calculus which followed Lacroix's monumental Traité du Calcul différentiel et du Calcul intégral (1797-98), was translated into English by Herschel and Peacock in 1816 as part of their Analytical Society's activities. It was due to this text that differential notation and continental methods of analysis were introduced into England and its publication marks the restoration of mathematical science in that country.
